Perhaps you travel for business or perhaps you travel for fun and adventure. There are few among we travelers that have unlimited funds to anywhere we want at any time we want. So here are a few trips to stretch your travel dollar.
Research your destination and plan ahead. Map out your time and make your travel arrangements in advance. You may enjoy the freedom of last minute travel, but that will cost you a lot of money. For airline tickets, try to book at least 2 weeks in advance of your travel. Booking any later than that could cost you double or triple on your airline tickets. Waiting until the last minute to book a hotel room may make you pay full retail for a room.
Compare prices on fares, hotels and rental cars. Search at a popular travel site like Hotwire, who has nearly every flight, room and rental car company around the world. Their software will do most of the leg work for you, on finding the best prices. Keep an eye out for package deals that meet your needs. These will often save you 25% or more off your total cost of travel.
Utilize local travel and regional airlines. If you are taking a trip to the other side of the world, check alternate destinations nearby where you want to go. For example, if you were traveling from the US to Cambodia, it may be cheaper to fly into Bangkok, Thailand and then taking a short shuttle ride to Siem Reap.
Don’t check luggage. Most airlines these days are charging for luggage. If you become a minimalist and get some good carry on bags, you can travel the world without ever checking a bag. Traveling with less luggage also makes you less conspicuous while traveling. A humble backpacker is less of a target for theft than a rich western tourist. Staying safe while traveling not only saves money, it is priceless.
Follow these tips and your dollar will go further and so will you.
